The Plantagon underground farm, like other indoor farms, will grow plants in the building with LED lighting. The company plans to sell fruits and vegetables directly to office workers in the same building, as well as to two restaurants on the side of the building; about one-third of the value will be sold to nearby grocery stores, and the transportation process is close to no need to consume any petroleum fuel. Other one-thirds of the value will be sold in the shops in the building.

"In Sweden, people have a higher hobby for food grown on the ground than organic food," Hassle said. "People generally want to know where food comes from."

Hassle makes up that if an organic lettuce is transported to a store from hundreds of miles or even thousands of miles away, its environmental footprint may be higher than that of lettuce grown on local indoor farms.

The Plantagon program will open 10 underground farms in Stockholm in the next three years, starting with a building with an underground heat pump system. The preparation team is also commenting with local power companies to sell the remaining heat to other buildings in the area.

In the city of Linkoping, a two-hour drive from Stockholm, the company is planning to expand the underground farm to a 16-story "plant skyscraper."
