Philips Lighting signs long-term partner Wim Peters with the latest LED plant lighting project

July 08, 2023

● After the hail disaster, Wim Peters rebuilt the two greenhouses and selected the Philips GreenPower LED inter-plant lighting module again.

● Higher light levels make winter crops grow more neatly, with better quality and taste

Eindhoven, the Netherlands – Philips Lighting (Amsterdam Stock Exchange: LIGHT), a global leader in lighting, recently announced that it has won a long-term partnership with Wim Peters, one of the largest tomato growers in the Netherlands. Peters rebuilt two greenhouses that were destroyed by hail in June 2016, and Philips Lighting will once again provide LED lighting for both greenhouses. Philips will also provide LED products for another new greenhouse in Peters to meet its expanding business needs and to comply with the growing demand for LED-planted tomatoes. The new LED products will have higher illumination levels than the Philips LEDs (up to 20km long) installed in these two greenhouses for the first time in 2013.

Higher light levels

In the past 10 years, not only tomatoes, but the light levels used in all vegetable cultivation have continued to rise. Peters previously installed a 55 μmol/m2/s LED inter-plant lighting module. In the new project, he chose a 75 μmol/m2/s LED inter-plant lighting module, so the light level was significantly improved. “The higher light levels make my winter crops grow more tidy, with better quality and taste,” Peters said. “It also brings more balanced vegetative and reproductive growth, which means more balanced leaf yield and yield.”

“We understand that other tomato growers have a higher demand for light levels,” said Udo van Slooten, global general manager of Philips LED Plant Lighting. “To meet this demand, we launched a new generation of Philips GreenPower LED inter-plant lighting modules earlier this year with a system efficiency of 3.0 μmol/J. The module is easy to install and maintain, significantly reducing the total cost of engineering installation. Belgium, Some tomato growers in Russia and France have recently switched to higher light levels."

Over 26,000 GreenPower LED inter-plant lighting modules

Philips will install more than 26,000 GreenPower LED inter-plant lighting modules for the two rebuilt new greenhouses, which will be completed in October 2017. The new hybrid lighting system will combine HPS top lighting with Philips GrennPower LED inter-plant lighting module for high output, covering a total area of 10.6 hectares. The lighting installation will be implemented by Philips LED plant lighting partner Codema BE de Lier, which has long-term cooperation with another Philips LED plant lighting partner Agrolux to provide customers with the best hybrid lighting system.
