Japan develops a new revolution in the history of new light-emitting diodes or outbreak LED lighting systems

April 14, 2022
Quantum dots have already experienced important moments. Last month, Samsung’s first quantum TV was officially shipped, and production is gradually increasing, which means that the promise of 15 years ago seems to have been achieved.

At present, researchers at Hiroshima University in Japan have used silicon-based quantum dots to develop a new type of light-emitting diode, and promised that this will be a new revolution in the history of lighting systems. These researchers have created an inorganic/organic hybrid light-emitting diode that emits blue-white electroluminescence through quantum dots. This blue and white LED will allow us to invent a new generation of free lighting and display lighting systems.

In a research report published by Applied Physics Letters, researchers say that their quantum dot LEDs can emit light at only 6 volts, and 78% of the effective luminescence From silicon quantum dots.

To let you know how these numbers are calculated, about six years ago, the quantum efficiency of quantum dots used in state-of-the-art electroluminescent diodes was reduced from greater than 90% to about 15% because these quantum dots must be loaded. Into an organic film for electrical conduction.

These Japanese researchers also said that their LEDs produced 280 and 350 times the input and output power densities of the previously reported devices. The input and output power densities of these quantum dot-based LEDs are so high because these hierarchical structures are continually optimized to some extent to better enable carrier transfer.

The actual physical size of this LED provides an effective area of 4 square millimeters, which is 40 times that of a proprietary commercial LED. In addition, the thickness of this LED is only 0.5 mm.

Perhaps the most attractive aspect of the survey is that the new LEDs are manufactured by a solution process that requires room temperature and chamber pressure.

This manufacturing process requires the selection of a glass substrate and then pouring some conductive polymer solution and colloidal silicon quantum solution onto it.

Ken-ichi Saitow, a professor and research leader at Hiroshima University, added: "The quantum dot LED has attracted a lot of attention as the next generation of LED. Although its successful application still needs some breakthroughs, the quantum dot hybrid LED has achieved fruitful results. It will be far beyond our imagination."
