Japan's Murata and Toko jointly develop ultra-small SMD power inductors

Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. and Dongguang Co., Ltd. have jointly developed a compact ultra-thin chip power inductor “DFES” with a size of 1.6mm×0.8mm×0.8mm. This is a wire wound inductor using metal magnetic powder (registered trademark "Dongguang" as "metal alloy") and is mainly used for small portable devices such as smart phones and wearable devices.

According to reports, this new product is a joint development of the two companies to integrate previously accumulated technologies. Specifically, this time we have merged DongGung's winding technology and metal material technology with Murata Manufacturing's microfabrication technology and chip component production technology. This product can meet the requirements of miniaturization, thinning, and long battery life of power circuits proposed by portable devices such as smartphones.

In the release document, the two companies introduced the "DFE160808S" as an example to introduce the electrical characteristics of the new product. This product has an inductance of 0.47μH, a DC resistance of 50mΩ (standard value), and a DC overlapping allowable current of 3A (standard value). The new product will begin mass production in the fourth quarter of 2014. In the future, the two companies will continue to jointly develop wire wound inductors using metal magnetic powders to provide highly efficient, small, ultra-thin products.
